Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture S/S 2010 - Christian Dior

For this season, John Galliano moved away from the underwear as outerwear look (a look that he helped made overly popular) and instead, got out the riding crop. With inspiration from the ladies of the late 19th century, from the Equestrian Ladies to the Gibson Girl, the latest collection for Dior Haute Couture was elegant, charming and fun. One could easily spot Dita Von Tease don the hat, bustle, gloves and crop to another runway show, perhaps even a performance. It would be no surprise to see Marion Cotillard wear one of the glamorous evening gowns, the one with the large bow in the back comes to mind. However, I'm curious to know who would wear the lovely short day dresses which were some of my favorites. Once again, it was another lovely show by Mr. Galliano and one can't help but smile to see him in Equestrian attire and pose with the ladies. It seemed so natural.

The Versace man for the Fall 2010 season is a tough, no nonsense man. The overall look of the collection is part Terminator and part Neo from The Matrix, with a dash of color thrown in to soften it up. Still, there were pieces from this collection that I wouldn't mind having. The black leather jacket and vest is tops on my list. I love the interesting textures and designs on them. I wouldn't mind the ribbed sweaters to go along with the suits as well but if I'm feeling adventurous, I might just go for the lavender leather pants.

The biggest accessory for the red carpet at the 67th Golden Globe Awards wasn't a clutch or expensive jewelry but instead, a giant umbrella. The rains grew heavier as the evening progressed but the star power was still shining bright. Some of the best dressed stars of the evening in my opinion wore the bright colors. There were lots of pink gowns on the red carpet, spring in the air perhaps? Gowns by Marchesa, Dolce & Gabbana, Roland Mouret, Christian Lacroix and Christian Dior were just a few of my favorites. Actress Christina Hendricks wore a gown by Project Runway star Christian Siriano and George Clooney and Elizabetta Canalis both easily win any best dressed couples awards. In light of the recent events in the Earthquake in Haiti, many stars including Merly Streep, Amy Pohler and Olivia Wilde will donate their Golden Globe dresses for auction on Ebay. 100% of the funds raised by the dresses will go directly to the people of Haiti thanks to the charity organization, Artists for Peace and Justice. The Fall 2010 menswear collection of Gianfranco Ferre by designers Roberto Ramondi and Tommaso Aquilano stayed with a very simple color palette of white, grey and black but the shapes of the coats were modern with wide lapels (wide by Milan menswear standards) and there were lots of luxurious embellishments such as fur. Fur was seen as accessories, on collars and in the linings of coats. Interesting textures were seen on suits, scarves and sweaters and I enjoyed the way they mixed the herringbone and checked patterns on the suits, ties and shirts. The overall look for Gianfranco Ferre is both modern and luxurious.

Tank tops and long johns never looked so good. The Fall 2010 menswear collection of Dolce & Gabbana is an ode to basics with a good measure of suits and tuxedos thrown in. Browns and greys were the major colors of the collection and cotton, wools and velvets were the top fabrics. The suits and ties were slim cut as always and vests were added to the wardrobe. Perhaps it's time the men joined the ladies in wearing inner wear as outer wear as the male models were seen strutting down the runway in their long johns and top coats. Will the trend catch on with men? We'll have to wait and see.

The latest looks from the Fall 2010 menswear collection of Burberry Prorsum was certainly inspired by the colors and styles of military dress uniforms. Lots of buttons, zippers, flaps and epaulets were seen on a number of suits and coats. Designer Chris Bailey went for an atumnal color palette with olive as the major color. It came in numerous shades and I have to say, I love the color. It feels fresh. Overall, it was a lovely collection from an iconic brand.

The Fall 2010 collection for Emporio Armani showed a wide range of looks from beautifully textured suits and sweaters to the neon highlights of ski and sportswear. There were lots of fun pieces to choose from with some of my favorites being the sweaters. The color palette was mostly black, white and grey but there were splashes of neon blues, greens, reds and yellows. No doubt lovers of the Emporio Armani label will have many reasons to shop.

Sarah Jessica Parker is the latest star to take part in a designer collaboration. Though her role is as yet to be clearly defined, some are guessing that she might have a creative position, possibly as a creative director. Halston Heritage is a secondary line to the premiere Halston line. Halston Heritage has lower price points with dresses topping out at US$600. The line draws heavily upon the iconic designs of Halston's archives and reinterprets them for modern times. Why the collaboration instead of just hiring Sarah as the spokesmodel and why the secondary line as opposed to the main line are questions yet to be answered. Hopefully the union will be a success and the fashion world eagerly awaits Sarah Jessica Parker's debut.

"Dressed to the Nines", get used to the phrase because you'll hear it often enough when it comes to describing the fabulous all-star cast of Rob Marshall's latest musical film "Nine". The ladies are a designer's and stylist's dream come true. The fashion community surely can't wait to dress stars Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson, Marion Cotillard, Fergie, Sophia Lauren and Dame Judi Dench for their romps along the movie premiere red carpet and to their inevitable trip to the biggest red carpet of all, The Oscars. We got just a hint of that glamour to come at the recent New York premiere of Nine. Also appearing on the red carpet were stars Naomi Watts, Madonna and the Olsens, Mary Kate and Ashley. It was a family affair sort of evening as Madonna brought along daughter Lourdes, Fergie brought her mom and Kate's mom, Goldie Hawn (no stranger to a musical herself) was her date for the evening.

Oscar De La Renta Pre-Fall 2010 Show

Helping to generate some buzz for the upcoming shows in February, Pre Fall season has arrived in the runways and showrooms of the fashion world. Designer Oscar De La Renta was one of the first to embrace the Pre Fall venue, making full use of the media attention to spread the word. If Pre Fall is any indication (which it usually is) of a designer's direction, then the upcoming Fall of 2010 collection for Oscar De La Renta will be a vibrant mix of shapes and colors. Oscar draws upon his earlier years as a young designer in Spain. Spanish inspired colors, prints and silhouettes are seen through out this collection. The clothes are fun, not at all drab or boring, which suits the typically wealthy Oscar De La Renta customer just perfectly, with or without a recession.
